Uber’s platform recorded 3.87 billion trips in the three months to June 2026. Yet the Federal Reserve found that 70% of Americans who did gig work spent under five hours a week on it. That gap defines the sector. This page collects gig economy statistics on participation, hours, demographics, platform scale and freelance pay, each with its source and measurement period.
Gig Economy Statistics
How Many Americans Do Gig Work?
The Federal Reserve asked about gig activities in its October 2024 survey and found 20% of adults had done some in the prior month. The 2025 report, published May 2026, contains no gig activity figures, so the 2024 edition remains the most recent federal read.
Selling items was the most common activity at 13%. App-based tasks such as ride-hailing and delivery reached 4%, which undercuts the assumption that gig work is mainly rideshare and couriers.
| Gig activity | Share of US adults |
|---|---|
| Any gig activity | 20% |
| Any selling or renting | 14% |
| Any selling | 13% |
| Selling items previously owned | 10% |
| Any short-term tasks | 9% |
| Selling items purchased to resell | 4% |
| Short-term tasks using an app or website | 4% |
| Selling items made or repurposed | 3% |
| Offering short-term rentals | 2% |

Is Gig Work a Main Job or a Side Income?
Gig activity sits beside other work for most people who do it. Of adults who did gig activities, 96% usually spent under 35 hours a week on them and 51% held a non-gig main job.
Only 21% called gig activities their main job. Anyone comparing this against second-job data will find the same pattern in these side hustle statistics, where supplemental earning also dominates.
| Measure | Share of adults who did gig activities |
|---|---|
| Usually spent under 35 hours a week | 96% |
| Usually spent under 5 hours a week | 70% |
| Has a non-gig main job | 51% |
| Reported gig activities as their main job | 21% |

Gig Economy Statistics By Demographic Group
Participation falls with age. Among adults aged 18 to 29, 26% did gig work, against 12% of those 60 and over.
Students led every group at 30%. The gender split was narrow, 21% of men and 19% of women, so the male-majority claim describes driving apps rather than gig work overall. Location-independent workers show a different age profile in these digital nomad statistics.
| Group | Share of that group doing gig activities |
|---|---|
| Students | 30% |
| Ages 18 to 29 | 26% |
| Parents of younger children | 26% |
| Ages 30 to 44 | 24% |
| Hispanic adults | 24% |
| Ages 45 to 59 | 21% |
| Men | 21% |
| All adults | 20% |
| Women | 19% |
| Ages 60 and over | 12% |

What Gig Workers Say About Flexibility and Pay
The Federal Reserve asked gig workers whether they agreed with six statements, and split responses by activity type. Flexibility scored highest among app-based workers at 78%, against 48% for people selling or renting.
Pay consistency ran the other way. Among people doing app-based tasks, 61% wished the pay was steadier and 42% wanted benefits such as health insurance.
| Statement | Selling or renting | Short-term tasks | Platform tasks |
|---|---|---|---|
| I am my own boss doing it | 59% | 62% | 61% |
| It lets me work flexible hours | 48% | 70% | 78% |
| I wish the pay was more consistent | 46% | 54% | 61% |
| It gives me work-life balance | 29% | 46% | 52% |
| Without it, I would have trouble making ends meet | 27% | 43% | 41% |
| I wish I got benefits, like health insurance, from doing it | 26% | 37% | 42% |

Financial outcomes tracked the same split. Among adults who did any gig activity, 65% said they were doing okay or living comfortably, compared with 75% of adults who did none. For platform gig workers the figure was 55%.

Uber last published aggregate driver and courier earnings for the fourth quarter of 2024, when drivers and couriers earned $20.0 billion including tips. The metric has not appeared in its quarterly releases since.
DoorDash order volume and Dasher earnings
DoorDash reported 970 million orders and $33.1 billion in marketplace gross order value for the quarter ended June 2026. Its Deliveroo acquisition closed on 2 October 2025, so figures from the fourth quarter of 2025 onward include that business; excluding it, orders rose 17% and order value 23% in the June 2026 quarter.
| Quarter | Total orders | Marketplace GOV |
|---|---|---|
| Q4 2024 | 685m | $21.3bn |

Across 2025, DoorDash reported over $20 billion in earnings for Dashers and nearly $75 billion in sales for local merchants in more than 40 countries. Both platform totals split across a wide, part-time base, which matches what the Federal Reserve found on hours.
Gig Economy Earnings Statistics for Skilled Freelancers
Upwork surveyed 2,400 US skilled knowledge workers in March and April 2026 and found 38% freelancing, up from 28% in its previous edition. The share of full-time employees considering freelance work rose from 36% to 58%.
This measures skilled knowledge work, not rides or delivery, and Upwork draws that line itself. Pay reflects it: comparable patterns appear in these freelancer statistics and in wider US remote work data.
| Upwork measure | 2025 index | 2026 index |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled knowledge workers freelancing | 28% | 38% |
| Full-time employees considering freelancing | 36% | 58% |
Source: Upwork Research Institute, Future Workforce Index. 2025 edition surveyed 3,000 US skilled knowledge workers, December 2024 to February 2025; 2026 edition surveyed 2,400, March to April 2026, margin of error 2% at 95% confidence.
Upwork put 2024 earnings for US skilled knowledge freelance work at over $1.5 trillion, spread across roughly 20 million workers, with full-time freelancers reporting a median income of $85,000. On its own marketplace, freelancers doing AI work earned 34% more per hour in the 2026 index than those not using it.
The split within AI work is not uniform. Generative AI and creative production saw 90% year-over-year growth in contract starts while per-contract earnings fell 13%. More complex AI work saw earnings rise 45%. Desk-based independents tend to invest in their setups early, and these home office layouts and compact workspace builds show how that plays out in practice.
Focus conditions matter for people billing by the hour, a point covered in these workplace distraction statistics. Freelancers starting out without capital can work from low-cost desk arrangements instead.
FAQs
How many people work in the gig economy?
20% of US adults did some gig activity in the month before the Federal Reserve’s October 2024 survey. Only 21% of them treated it as their main job, so most gig work supplements other income.
How much do Uber and DoorDash pay gig workers?
DoorDash reported over $20 billion in Dasher earnings across 2025. Uber last disclosed aggregate driver and courier earnings for the fourth quarter of 2024, at $20.0 billion including tips.
Are Reddit threads about gig work reliable?
Reddit posts capture individual experience, not a measured sample. The gig figures here come from the Federal Reserve’s household survey, which put participation at 20% of US adults. Treat Reddit earnings screenshots as anecdotes, not representative gig economy statistics.
