Compare Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace market share in 2026, with data on adoption, customer counts, spending, seats, pricing, company size, and country-level usage.

Three trackers measured the same two products in September 2026 and produced three different rankings. 6sense counts tracked customer domains. Enlyft counts install base. Cledara counts real SaaS purchasing. The office suite market share Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace question only resolves once you separate accounts from seats from dollars. Every figure below carries what it measures and when.

Which Office Suite Leads on Market Share Right Now?

Google leads on distinct organisations. Microsoft leads on adoption inside purchasing data. Neither statement contradicts the other, because the three trackers count different populations against different denominators.

6sense tracks 17 technologies in its Office Suites category. Enlyft tracks 153 products across a much broader Office Productivity category that also includes Microsoft Outlook and Adobe tools. Cledara measures each product’s share of all SaaS purchasing activity in its dataset that month.

Within 6sense’s category the shares are exclusive, so they can be read as one whole.

6sense lists Google Sheets separately at 6.29% and Zoho at 1.56%, which is part of why its category looks so lopsided. Enlyft’s wider net produces a two-point gap instead.

Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace Market Share Trend, 2024 to 2026

Cledara publishes a monthly series built from anonymised company card payments. Microsoft 365 has held the adoption lead across the whole window, but its share peaked at 4.59% in January 2026 and read 4.23% in August 2026 before returning to 4.51% in September.

Google Workspace moved the other way, from 2.47% in September 2024 to 3.67% in September 2026.

Spend share tells a different story. March 2025 is the first month Google Workspace’s spend share sits above Microsoft 365’s, and it has stayed above in every month since.

How Many Seats and Paying Customers Does Each Suite Have?

Microsoft publishes seats. Google publishes paying organisations. Dividing one by the other produces nothing useful, which is where most comparisons go wrong.

On its FY26 Q2 earnings call in January 2026, Microsoft reported more than 450 million paid Microsoft 365 commercial seats and 15 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats. By FY26 Q4, ended June 2026, Copilot passed 30 million paid seats.

Google’s own product boilerplate puts Workspace at more than 3 billion users and over 11 million paying customers. Alphabet does not break out Workspace revenue; it sits inside Google Cloud, which reported $24.8 billion in Q2 2026, up 82%.

Microsoft’s Productivity and Business Processes segment, which carries Microsoft 365 alongside LinkedIn and Dynamics, ran $139,996 million for the fiscal year ended June 2026. Microsoft 365 commercial cloud revenue grew 14% as reported that quarter; consumer cloud revenue grew 24%.

Office Suite Market Share by Company Size

The two customer bases are shaped differently. Google Workspace’s tracked base concentrates in micro-businesses, with 1,023,003 customers in the 0 to 9 employee band. Microsoft Office’s largest band is 100 to 249 employees, at 105,860.

That split explains the seat-versus-account gap directly. Accounts weighted toward firms of under ten people convert into far fewer seats than accounts weighted toward mid-market firms. It also tracks the wider shift in how knowledge work is organised, visible in current hybrid work adoption figures and in US telework rates.

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace Market Share by Country

The United States dominates both bases, and the second country is the United Kingdom for both. The third differs: Germany for Google Workspace, Canada for Microsoft Office.

Different secondary markets, not just different volumes in the same ones. Regional splits like this also show up in return-to-office policy data.

Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace Pricing Compared

The entry tiers match exactly at $7. Above that, Microsoft’s headline business SKUs now bundle Copilot, and the gap widens.

Both vendors charge for AI. Only one itemises it. Google folded Gemini into Business and Enterprise plans in January 2025 and stopped selling the Gemini Business, Gemini Enterprise, AI Meetings and Messaging, and AI Security add-ons, with add-on billing ending after January 31, 2025. Microsoft still sells Microsoft 365 Copilot Business as a separate add-on, listed at $21.00 per user per month with an $18.00 promotional price.

Why the Office Suite Market Share Numbers Disagree

Two reconciliations settle almost everything above. Counting accounts favours Google, because over a million of its tracked customers employ fewer than ten people. Counting seats favours Microsoft, whose base skews toward larger firms.

Spend share is not price. Google Workspace tops Cledara’s spend ranking while listing $14 for the tier Microsoft prices at $23.50, and 67.4% of companies paying for one also pay for the other. For a Workspace-specific view of the same underlying numbers, see this Google Workspace usage breakdown.

Neither product is losing. What these figures do not contain is any measure of features, reliability or fit, and none of them account for how the tools get used day to day, a gap that meeting load research and home-office output studies fill in from the other direction.

FAQs

Which has more market share, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace?

It depends on the measure. Google Workspace holds 73.42% of 6sense’s tracked Office Suites customers versus Microsoft Office’s 16.39%. Microsoft 365 leads Cledara’s SaaS adoption share at 4.51% against 3.67% (September 2026).

How many Microsoft 365 seats are there?

Microsoft reported more than 450 million paid Microsoft 365 commercial seats on its FY26 Q2 earnings call in January 2026. Paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats passed 30 million by FY26 Q4, ended June 2026.

How many paying customers does Google Workspace have?

Google states Workspace has over 11 million paying customers and more than 3 billion users. Paying customers are organisations, not seats, so the figure is not comparable with Microsoft’s seat count.

Is Google Workspace cheaper than Microsoft 365?

At the entry tier both list $7 per user per month on annual commitment. At the core business tier Google Workspace Business Standard lists $14 against $23.50 for Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot.

Why do Reddit threads quote different market share figures for these suites?

Because trackers count different things: customer domains, install base, or share of software spend. A number is only meaningful with its denominator, its measure and its date attached.
