April 2026 Layoffs Removed 16% of Snap’s Full-Time Staff

CEO Evan Spiegel told staff on April 15, 2026 that the changes would affect about 1,000 team members, including 16% of full-time employees. Snap also closed more than 300 open roles.

Spiegel linked the cuts to AI, saying faster AI progress lets teams reduce repetitive work and move faster. Snap expects to lower its annualized cost base by more than $500 million by the second half of 2026.

Departing U.S. employees received four months of severance, healthcare coverage, equity vesting and career transition support.

What the 2026 Restructuring Cost

Snap’s April 15 Form 8-K estimated pre-tax charges of $95 million to $130 million, with $75 million to $100 million expected in cash. Actual charges reached $128.5 million in the six months ended June 30, 2026.

Severance and related costs made up $74.4 million of the 2026 total. The 2024 round cost $70.2 million, of which $55.3 million was severance and related.

Snap has disclosed four workforce reductions since 2022. The 2026 cut ranks second by share of headcount, behind the roughly 20% reduction in 2022.

Snap lowered adjusted operating expense guidance by $250 million and stock-based compensation guidance by $150 million on the day of the layoffs. Both targets held in August.

The Q1 2026 investor letter said personnel savings would show more fully from Q3 onward. Snap says it now maps critical work to small teams and AI agents, a shift tracked in broader future of work data.
